FIRST AID - BRIEF HINTS
1. Remove the cause of injury or patient from the cause.
2. Note if breathing is absent - perform artificial respiration. Most satisfactory method is NOT to be used when there are facial injuries or when corrosive poisons have been taken or cyanide ingested. Alternative method is Holgar Nielsen or Sylvester.
3. When bleeding is severe apply pressure with thumbs or fingers to bleeding point to stop flow of blood - then substitute with pad and bandage. If broken bone or foreign body is present apply dressing and pad to prevent pressure on broken bone, and bandage.
4. Fractures (broken bones). Avoid movement at seat of injury, steady and support, if lower limb to sound limb, upper limb to be supported by slings or tied to trunk.
5. Do not give fluids to unconscious patients or those with fractures or suspected internal injuries, moisten lips only.
6. Severe Burns Lessen the spread of heat in the tissue and alleviate pain by immersing the part in cool water. Remove anything of a constrictive nature - rings, bangles, etc. Before the parts start to swell. Cover the inured part with a dressing, clean sheeting, pillow case. Immobilise a badly burned limb. Give small cold drinks at frequent intervals to a badly burned casualty, if conscious. Do not apply any lotions ointments or dressings.
7. Faints. Loosen tight clothing around neck and chest - keep head low and turn to one side - raise legs slightly.
HOLGAR NEILSEN: Method of inducing respiration by having the casualty faced downward with head turned onto the arms. Kneel at head and place hands on casualty's back just below shoulder blades, and rock forward with elbows straight until arms are approximately vertical, exerting steady pressure on chest. Repeat 12 times.
SYLVESTER: Method of inducing respiration by having the body face upwards and resting shoulders on roller jacket etc. Extend casualty's hand above head then rock forward placing hands on lower part of casualty's chest. Repeat 12 times a minute.
N.B. Consistent with other injuries, if any, turn an unconscious casualty into the three quarter prone position, i.e. onto his side, this will avoid the possibility of asphyxiation by vomit or tongue obstruction.
